Project Description

The project “Sofia Summer vs. Prague Spring” offers a new point of view towards the events in 1968, presenting information about the scale of censorship at that time and the means of manipulation, which were used by the totalitarian government when the danger of democratization was in sight. This research will provide documents as an evidence about the communist propaganda; a different look at the events that shook the Eastern Block and predetermined the fall of Berlin Wall 20 years later. 40 years after the events in Czechoslovakia, the project presents two parallel realities – Prague Spring and Sofia Summer in 1968. How did the communist propaganda, through the coverage on Bulgarian National Television, Bulgarian National Radio and newsreels shown in cinemas at that time present the situation in Czechoslovakia? Nowadays stories and memories of people who were involved – a comparison between their point of view and the documentary scenes presented to Bulgarian audience in 1968.
